Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway ++ The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway was one of the busiest and most complex of the pre-grouping of British Railways. It ranked fifth in overall size and stretched across England from Liverpool and Fleetwood in the west to Goole in the east, and served a greater population per mile of route than other major lines. With much of its mileage in hilly terrain civil engineering works were massive with numerous tunnels, bridges, viaducts and some fearsome gradients.

The L&Y was known as the “Business Line” and was the very epitome of the area through which it ran, serving the great textile towns, collieries and major Irish and North Sea ports. It passenger services ranged from smartly timed expresses to the intense and complex local workings around Liverpool and Manchester.

Through a team of energetic and competent managers the railways was at the forefront of engineering development. It was an early user of the Belpaire firebox and the first to introduce superheated steam. Electrification of local services started in 1904 and it operated the largest railway owned shipping fleet in the country. The locomotives in their smart black paint with red and white lining and oval brass number plates hauled trains of lake and tan liveried carriages and long freight trains over the difficult Pennine terrain.

It is designed to show that modelling railways is within the capability of most families. The objective has been to capture the essence of a typical Victorian Railways branch line. Authenticity can advance as time, improvement in modelling skills, and acquisition of appropriate models, allow. AMRA QLD Inc. Display.

Nothing ++ Owned by Mervyn Powell & Eddie Stawled, is a freelance N scale layout. It has 3 mainlines running a variety of passenger & freight trains.

O Gauge Heritage ++ This exhibit is a running display of ‘heritage’ O gauge models including scratch-built, kit and commercial examples with a focus on Australian productions. The Australian rolling stock on show date from just pre-WWII through to the late 1950s. The scratch-built Queensland rolling stock are from the ‘George Gilmore Collection’. Many of the kit and commercial models have been acquired and painstakingly restored; most can be found in the key Australian reference book Spring, Spark and Steam and many on the National Museum of Australia website.

Regrettably, as the operator has few Australian locomotives of similar age available for running, a range of engine models will be seen at work in fine examples of anatopism (something out of its proper place) and in some cases anachronism (something from a period for which it is inappropriate). The hand-built brass tracks (three foot radius, approx. two chain curves!) and baseboards were made in the early 1980s near Innisfail, shifted to Atherton, then relocated to AMRA Zillmere for a time, before being upgraded recently to both 2 and 3 rail running to cater for ‘heritage’ operations. While many people have generously provided items, materials and information to develop the examples on display, particular thanks go to Bert Toogood and the late Peter Lukey for their special contributions.

The layout also features a small suburb of houses with a town with shops and station all NSW. – Stuart Walker from Model Train Buildings, modeltrainbuildings.com.au.

Pages Pla-rail ++ Is a layout made using Tomy track and trains. I have Japanese local, freight and bullet trains, Chuggington, Thomas and friends all running on separate tracks powered by batteries.

Philden ++ Somewhere in New South Wales, at a railway station far, far away… lies the remote north-western town of Philden. Since making its debut at last years’ Brisbane show, a number of small improvements have taken place on the layout, demonstrating that you don’t need to have ‘oodles’ of space to build a layout that provides ‘oodles’ of fun. This is Australian HO scale modelling on an interesting bookshelf layout.

Pine Rivers ++ An N scale modular layout loosely based on the NTRAK standards. This layout, by the Railway Modeller’s Club of Queensland Inc., is always being modified and this year includes a visiting Circus which has come to town as well as Sporting Complex for tennis, swimming and basketball. A new, fully DCC controlled industrial area has been developed to help support the existing wheat loading silos and light industries with rail services. Points in this area are activated by slow motion servos controlled by DCC throttles. These upgrades were assisted by the generous donation of funds from the N Scale 2015 Convention Committee for the promotion of N Scale in Queensland. The housing estate continues to grow and is getting closer to occupation. All this surrounds the Canyon River scene with is township. We also control our layout with an NCE DCC system as well as a laptop computer and wireless interface so that we can drive our trains via our mobile phones and tablets. – Railway Modelers Club of QLD Inc., rmcq.org.au, rmcq@rmcq.org.au, Address: Buckley Park, Terrence Rd, Brendale QLD 4500.
