WWI Exhibition 1914 – 1918
The story of the role of rail transport in war is of national significance.  As part of the conflict of World War 1, railways played an important part in the logistics of was.  From recruitment trains that arrived at stations in country towns across Australia, to the troop trains transporting soldiers and nurses to their point of departure, train-side farewells were felt in every state and territory of Australia.  In the theatre of war, the hard work, stoicism and sheer courage of men operating railways in such adverse conditions shown by members of the Australian Light and Broad Gauge Railway Operating Companies on the front in Europe and Middle East exemplified the fighting spirit and camaraderie of Australians.

This latest travelling exhibition from The Workshops Rail Museum explores the role of railways at home and on the front and the pivotal role of rail in moving Australia’s military.  The exhibition is divided into 7 themes:

  • Forged For War
  • Signing Up and Saying Goodbye
  • Railways at the Front
  • Railway Units of the Great War
  • The Brotherhood of Railway Men
  • At Home
  • Legacies of War

Barinia – Redland Model Railway Group
Barinia is the Redlands Model Railway Group’s modular layout designed to run OO, HO, and S scale trains.  As this is a group layout, expect to see a mixture of trains, including those owned and run by women.  Although Barinia was a station on the Cleveland line until the 1960s, the scenery does not depict a specific place.  The Redlands Model Railway Group meets on the last Sunday of the month at the Redland Museum, 60 Smith St, Cleveland. At 1pm.  redlandsmodelrailway@gmail.com. Please ask the operators any questions about our layout or group.

Beersheeba 1917. Russia 1943.
Crossover from Model Rail to Military Modelling.  Honouring the Centenary of the Light Horse charge at Beersheeba by the Brisbane Toy Soldier Collectors in conjunction with the Military Work Shop.  A recent attack has left the Australian in charge of this Turkish railway station in Palestine.  The exuberant Light Horsemen engage in some spirited intelligence gathering.  Next, a train of flat cars is loaded with German Tiger Tanks about to go head to head with the Russian bear.  A smaller diorama shows a MKIV Tank at a siding in Brisbane during WWI.  The military Work Shop supplies an enormous range of 60mm figurines from all the major historical conflicts.

Brendale – Railway Modellers Club QLD Inc.
Brendale is a modular layout built by the Railway Modellers Club of Queensland to cater for the exhibition needs of our members.  The layout is designed to run both DC and DCC locomotives on separate tracks simultaneously, and while it has a basic Australian look and feel, trains from all around the world and in particular, the USA and UK, can also be seen.

It is based on small country town with a main station with passing loops, engine facilities and some local industries.  This allows trains to be always on display with continuous operation on the mainline or shunting in a siding or loco area.  Some of the industries or commercial premises displayed are strong supporters of our club.

The layout is transported in a purposely designed trailer to ensure protection and only needs one member to transport.  For more details about our club, visit www.rmcq.org.au visitors are always welcome.

British Railway Modellers of Australia (BRMA)

AMRA QLD Layout

Cylo Junction – All Gauge Model Railway Club
Cylo Junction is an ever-expanding portable layout and was built from start to finish in-house by just two of our experienced members working only three or four days a month.  It features a busy two track line running through Australian/USA countryside and a small, quiet rural town with commercial and industrial businesses serving their local area.  The layout is for members’ day to day use, is low for children to see at our public open days.

Visit our website www.allgauge.org.au for photos, videos and public open day dates.

Dan-Brae
‘Dan-Brae’ represents the end of a branch line which contains a station with a run around loop, parcel bay, industrial sidings, and a loco shed for storing locos overnight.  Also at one end is a sector plate with 3 tracks for holding rolling stock a hidden siding.  Please ask if you wish to know more.

Dawes
This is a small economical, lightweight N scale layout.  It was specifically designed to be easily transportable and set up.  It is an introduction type layout which is simple to operate yet interesting to run.  The scenery continues our hot and dry theme which we have employed for many years over successive layouts.  Contact: gerarde.ryan@gmail.com.

Digital Marklin World 6
Digital Marklin World 6 represents a very large 3 rail HO layout with full computer automation, 14 trains running at once.  Fuller  com system, hot air balloon flying above.  Train cam on 2 scenes.  Day and night lighting.

Eldnar Halt
Eldnar Halt is an N Gauge representation of an idealised village station situated within a British Rail environment.  The era is not fixed but appears to be comfortable in the post World War II steam era.  Life in the village will proceed at its own pace.  The duties of railway employees are not enormous.  There’s always time for a brew-up between trains.

Eldnar Halt is a simple beginners layout.  There are only four points all electronically operated.  The layout allows for dual control with isolated sectors allowing both through trains and yard works simultaneously.

Forrest Valley
Layout depicts 2 main lines running through station cutting cane farm tunnels  cuttings over bridges spiral and over lake past goods yards and township.

Children are invited to drive a train on this layout.

Funicular Railway
Recently built by Dave from the AMRA Qld Branch, this G scale (1/24) display shows the interesting way railways cope with steep slopes, one use to climb the hill to the Cloudland Ballroom from the tram stop in Breakfast Creek Road at Bowen Hills.

Glintown
Glintown is a modular N scale layout built to Australian T Trak standards using Kato Track.  It is an N Scale Layouts.  Modules are sometimes altered or extended to change appearance.  Glintown includes a city scene, sidings and a locomotive depot.  Trams can be seen travelling up and down in the city centre.  A variety of trains are in use.

Infectious Nostalgia
This brand new layout is a re-creation of a childhood simple O gauge toy train layout of the early 1950s.  The 300mm (1 foot) radius tinplate rails and the simple scenery items are typical of ‘beginner’ train sets of those times.  A mixture of Hornby rolling stock and engines dominates the trains on display.  For exhibition purposes, the track has been electrified.  The stress of continuously winding clockwork mechanisms for two days is just too much for the ageing operators.

Ipswich Model Railway Club T-Trak
This N-Scale layout is made up of T-Trak modules.  The size of the modules allows you to work on and display small dioramas which can be changed around to suit the area you want to display in.  The members can have any scenes on their modules and the modules can be easily stored and transported around.  For more details go to our Facebook page – Ipswich Model Railway Club.

Irgendwo – Hobby Railways
Hobby Railways is about all things N scale.  This year we’ve added light rail to our fictitious layout ‘Irgendwo’.  The urban landscape features a typical overhead catenary and a variety of buildings and structures, most of which are German kits.  There are accessories from all over the world including the unique Japanese made city tram system.  Locomotives and rolling stock are a trademark of mainly German and Swiss railway companies.  For photos and videos go to our Facebook page – Hobby Railways.

Iron Horse Junction
AMRA QLD Garden Railway Group’s G scale layout.  This double track display of 45mm tracks will show track powered, battery powered and steam powered model railways.  AMRA Queensland Branch has almost 200 metres of 45 & 32mm gauge outdoor track at the Zillmere clubrooms. The group has one of the largest range of steam powered models in Australia, over 150 locomotives are registered.

Logan Bend is an N scale modular layout depicting a variety of Queensland scenes from country to suburbs.  Rolling stock are typically Queensland with some American, Japanese and English making appearances.

Mansfield Branch
Mansfield Branch is a small HO scale layout, inspired by scenery near Mt Buller and branch line operations.  It is designed to show that modelling railways is within the capability of most families.  The objective has been to capture the essence of a typical Victorian Railways branch line.  This began in a small space, however it is now being extended.  We are not to obsessed about authenticity here.  Authenticity can advance as time, improvement in modelling skills, and acquisition of appropriate models, allow.

Philden
Somewhere in New South Wales, at a railway station far, far away… lies the remote station of Philden, a fictional HO scale country railway station that still sees a daily Xplorer train service to Sydney.  Set between 1995 to 2005, this 2.6 metre long bookshelf layout was built to stand proudly above an author’s desk to provide some writing inspiration work started 2 years ago to this weekend after a visit to the 2015 Brisbane Model Train Show, and it’s progress has been blogged step-by-step at www.phildenmodelrailway.blogspot.com

Pine Rivers
Pine Rivers is an N scale modular layout loosely based on the NTRAK standards.  This layout, by the Railway Modeller’s Club of Queensland Inc., is always being modified and this year includes a visiting Circus which has come to Town as well as the Sporting Complex for Tennis, Swimming and Basketball.  A new, fully DCC controlled industrial area has been developed to help support the existing Wheat Loading Silos and Light industries with rail services.  Points in this area are activated by slow motion servos controlled by  DCC throttles.  These upgrades were assisted by the generous donation of funds from the N scale 2015 Convention Committee for the promotion of N scale in Queensland.  The Housing Estate continues to grow and is getting closer to occupation.  All this surrounds the Canyon River Scene with its Township.  We also control our layout with an NCE DCC system as well as a laptop computer and wireless interface so that we can drive our trains via our mobile phones and tablets.

‘Tarni’ is a fictitious railway branch line siding somewhere in S/W or S/E Queensland.  The simple passing loop and loading ramp was very common track configuration for many stops on QLD branch lines.  It features all the typical elements found in a once busy rural siding of its size that would have serviced the transport needs of the farming community of the immediate area.  It is set in an era when railways were on a steady decline as a central transport and freight system, when farmers were buying their own trucks and utilities and roads had improved.  Farmers could now take control of their own transport requirements.  Post WW2 till the mid to  late 60’s saw many branch lines shut down and railways destroyed.  Tarni is typical of these railways that were lost.

Rose Valley
Rose Valley was designed and created by Chloe Rosenberg.  Chloe is a 16 year old girl who has been around trains all her life.  Her Father also helped her make this.  She has made this layout from her imagination.  For questions feel free to as her or her Dad, Jeff Rosenberg for more information.

Stumars Roundabout
This oval shaped, 2 tiered, which has 6 separate scenes is the combined work of Graham Ode and Stuart Walker.  The intention of this layout was to capture the fascination of the younger ones and their families, and to illustrate the fun with imagination that can be had with each individual theme.

The sections are as follows; ‘Jurassic Era’, where dinosaurs and train travel meet.  ‘Eerie Gorge’ captures a scene out of near any zombie film with many other creepy elements thrown in.  Can you spot the flying jellyfish?

In the 3rd section we travel to Austria, where there are so many people, all doing slightly zany things, even rioting!! Then on to the final section of Graham’s work, the town of ‘Maleny’ QLD, well, the modeller’s interpretation of what Maleny maybe should be like.

The 5th section of the lower section is a Victorian country scene, with the inclusion of ‘Wangaratta’ shearer’s shed and sheep stock yards and the ‘Victorian Miner’s Cottage’ part of the range that is created by ‘Walker Models’.

Then onwards and upwards we go to a typical Australian country town.  It showcases many of the buildings kits found at ‘Walker Models’ (www.modeltrainbuildingkits.com.au) who also run the stall located with the fantastic creative piece, which in such a small space, shows so many different ways that one (or the whole family) can enjoy the hobby of Model Trains.

With this hobby, ‘You are only limited by your imagination’.
